In the course of their joint research project in mechanical modeling of polymers, Anastasia Muliana (Texas A&M University, College Station, TX) and Daniel Tscharnuter (PCCL) visited the Mechanics of Polymers division at the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing. This division is engaged in the mechanical characterization of polymers and polymer composites. Their research topics cover failure and fatigue as well as the determination of fracture mechanical and viscoelastic properties. Gerhard Kalinka is the head of the micromechanics group. His work focuses on the analysis of fiber reinforced plastics on the millimeter-, micrometer- and nanometer scale. His group has developed special test devices for the analysis of adhesion between fibers and the polymer matrix material. With these unique methods, they are able to provide crucial data for the modeling of the mechanical properties of fiber reinforced plastics.
